Since my introduction to this breed as a child, I have established a dream to be
one of the best, or at least well respected in this game. In our history with the
breed, we have owned countless Terriers. So to say the least, we have certainly gone through this process. Our experience's has led us to slowly but surely place one foot in front of the other in an effort to establish a highly respected collection of finely tuned athletes to build our yard and our future as well respected Breeders.
In reality this needs to be one of the goals of every dog breeder. Obtaining uniformity
in a breeding program happens as a result of thought out breedings and experience
in putting pedigrees together.
Many people contact us and have specific colors in mind (which is fine.) But as a
Breeder, we never specialize in breeding for color or extreme size (maybe some day
we will find the need for breeding goals to include a specific color - but that time has not
come yet!) We are much more interested in drive, temperament and conformation than
a specific color but we do breed for conformationally correct Terriers while never
forfieting temprament, movement, and drive with a great attitude.
Finally, just as we as a Breeder has to have goals, so do you, the person that buys
our dogs. The biggest problem I see with people who want working dogs as adults is
that they do not realize how important the first 18 months of a dogs life are. You need
to realize that, while I can give you a genetic package that has the potential to become
an excellent working dog, without your input in training and socializing, that dog will probably not develop into a successful dog.
Owning a Terrier is a 50-50 proposition. The work you do when the dog is young is
just as important as the work we have done over the past years to finely tune our
skills as a Breeder. If you want a Grand Champion or an Ace Weight Pull dog you are
going to have to put a lot of work into your pup. If you are prepared to do that then
with preserverance you will get what you want.
Competition is our ambition, but happy healthy Terriers are our top priority. Our are Terriers are very much loved and respected and we would never sell or use any Terrier
for any illegal purposes. Please add us to your favorites and check back occassionally to watch Tough-n-Tender Kennels produced Terriers make their mark as successful
competetors and as loving companions.
